Aruba is a true desert island - located in the Caribbean just off South America

Welcome to Aruba

updated - March 20, 2012

The Island of Aruba forms the western point of the Caribbean islands known as the ABCs (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao), and is located below the hurricane belt and featuring an almost ideal dry climate and constant temperature.

With the highest per-capita income in the Caribbean and a very low unemployment rate, Aruba is the exception and is virtually devoid of poverty and slum areas. Arubans are quite proud of their Dutch history and island heritage.

Gaming adds to the nighttime thrill, and is available at a dozen of so casinos. Being arid, some call Aruba the Las Vegas of the Caribbean.

Aruba

Claimed as a Spanish possession in 1499, and then abandoned as "worthless". Even the Dutch were hardly impressed with the island and it wasn't until gold was discovered in 1824 that Aruba began its assent.

After a century, the mine played out, but a new form of gold - Black Gold - in the form of a refinery in 1924 was the catalyst that took Aruba from scruffy, desert isle to the prosperous nation it has become.

The riches generated from Aruba has had a conservative effect on the island's residents, and tourism growth was curbed to a degree that has sustained the islands quality of life and inhibited mass immigration.
